Leadership Is Temporary. Stewardship Is Lasting.

Every July, more than 46,000 Rotary clubs around the world participate in a tradition known as "Pass the Gavel."

It's a simple ceremony.

One leader's year of service comes to an end, and another begins.

At this year's Henry County Rotary Club Gala, I was reminded that the ceremony isn't really about a gavel.

It's about stewardship.

Stewardship means caring for something that doesn't belong solely to us. We borrow leadership for a season, do our very best to serve others, and then pass the responsibility to someone else—hopefully leaving it a little stronger than we found it.

One of the things I admire most about Rotary is that no one serves forever.

Each president brings different gifts.

Different ideas.

Different strengths.

Yet the mission remains the same:

Service Above Self.

As I watched our outgoing president pass the gavel to our incoming president, I was reminded that true leadership isn't measured by titles or recognition. It's measured by the positive difference we leave behind.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized stewardship isn't limited to Rotary.

We see it every day.

Parents raising children.

Teachers preparing students for the future.

Business owners serving their clients with integrity.

Neighbors caring for one another.

Volunteers giving their time to strengthen their communities.

Even homeowners caring for a house that will one day become someone else's home.

Each of us is a steward of something.

Serving as the Henry County Rotary Club's Service Projects Chair has reminded me that some of the most meaningful work happens quietly behind the scenes. It isn't about recognition or applause. It's about helping create opportunities for others and leaving our community better than we found it.

Perhaps that's what legacy really is.

Legacy isn't simply what people remember about us.

It's what continues because of us.

Every volunteer hour.

Every scholarship awarded.

Every Blessings Bag distributed.

Every child encouraged to read.

Every friendship formed.

Every new leader mentored.

Those acts of service continue long after a year's leadership has ended.

As we begin another Rotary year, I'm grateful for the leaders who have invested in our club over the years and excited for those who will continue that work in the year ahead.

The gavel may change hands.

The mission never does.

Rotary's Four-Way Test

At the close of every Rotary meeting around the world, members recite the Four-Way Test. These simple questions have guided Rotary leaders for generations and serve as a wonderful reminder in everyday life.

Of the things we think, say or do...

Is it the Truth?

Is it Fair to all concerned?

Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?

Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

If each of us paused to ask those four questions a little more often, I believe our families, our workplaces, and our communities would all be stronger.
