Whether you’re into history, outdoor adventures, or just looking for a great place to spend time together, here are my top picks for free family fun in McDonough.

1. Explore Heritage Park and the Veterans Museum

I take every single family member who visits to the Veterans Museum inside Heritage Park, and every time, they are blown away. The displays are incredible, and the best part...Veterans themselves give personal tours, sharing stories that make history come alive. Afterward, you can stroll the park’s trails, let the kids burn off some energy at the playground, or run the bases at the ball park.

2. Visit the Veterans Wall of Honor

If you want to teach your kids a little history and gratitude, the Veterans Wall of Honor in Heritage Park is a must-see. It’s a beautiful tribute to those who served, and every time I visit, I find something new that makes me stop and reflect.

3. Take a Walk Through Alexander Park

Alexander Park is perfect if you just need a relaxing day outside. The paved trails make it easy for strollers and bikes, and you could even bring a frisbee or a soccer ball for a quick game. There’s plenty of space to spread out, so whether you want to walk, have a picnic, or just let the kids run wild, it’s a great spot.

4. Join the Fun at the McDonough Square

McDonough Square always has something fun going on, and I love stopping by to see what’s happening. In fact, if you’re around for the St. Patrick’s Day Festival on March 16, 2025, be sure to come say hi! We’ll have a table set up with games and prizes, so bring the family and join the fun. Even if there’s no event, just walking around the square, checking out the murals, and grabbing a treat from one of the local shops is always a good time.

5. Take a Self-Guided Historic Walking Tour

If you’ve never taken the time to explore McDonough’s history, you’re missing out! There are so many historic buildings and markers around town that tell fascinating stories. It’s like a little treasure hunt, and it’s a great way to get some fresh air while learning something new. Be sure and stop by the Welcome Center first for one of their free brochures.
