The Blessings Bag Project: Small Bags, Big Impact

Some community projects stay with you long after the event itself is over.

The Blessings Bag Project is one of those for me.

At first glance, the project seems simple.

Volunteers gather supplies and assemble bags filled with practical everyday necessities that can help people facing difficult circumstances. Things like hygiene products, snacks, water, socks, and small comfort items many of us take for granted.

But once you begin assembling the bags and hearing the stories behind why they matter, you quickly realize this project is about far more than supplies.

It’s about dignity.

It’s about reminding people they matter.

Meeting Tami Sellers

One of the things I love most about community service projects is meeting people whose hearts genuinely shine through the work they do.

Tami Sellers is one of those people.

Tami owns Anchor Services Group, a family-owned residential and commercial cleaning company, and like many small business owners, she balances a busy schedule, work responsibilities, employees, clients, and everyday life. That’s one of the reasons this project impacts me so deeply. In the middle of all the demands life already brings, she still chooses to invest her time and energy into helping others.

But what makes the Blessings Bag Project especially meaningful is the deeply personal story behind it.

Tami openly shares that her brother struggled with mental illness and spent much of his adult life experiencing homelessness by choice. During visits with him over the years, he would often tell her stories about the small gifts and care packages people gave him while he was living on the streets.

He called them “blessings bags.”

After her brother passed away, Tami turned that memory into something that could continue helping others while also honoring his life and story.

I’ll be honest… hearing Tami talk about her brother and the realities of homelessness changed the way I personally viewed homeless people too. Sometimes it’s easy to see homelessness only as a large social issue instead of remembering that every person has a story, a family, struggles, heartbreak, and people who love them.

That perspective has stayed with me.

Why Projects Like This Matter

One thing I’ve learned through Rotary and community service work is that small acts of kindness often create ripple effects we never fully see.

A small blessing bag may:

• Help someone through a difficult day
• Restore a little dignity
• Remind someone they haven’t been forgotten
• Offer encouragement during a hard season

Sometimes the smallest gestures carry the greatest emotional weight.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

On June 26, the Henry County Rotary Club honored Tami Sellers with the Club Service Award during the club’s annual gala.

Honestly, it’s difficult to imagine someone more deserving.

Not simply because of the project itself, but because of the compassion, consistency, and heart behind everything she does.

What I Love About Henry County

Projects like this are one reason I love this community so much.

There are so many people quietly serving behind the scenes without needing recognition or attention. They simply see a need and step forward to help.

Those moments remind me that communities become stronger not only because of growth and development, but because people continue choosing to care about each other.
